Fairy Tales as "tall tales"...a mistake Tolkien corrects
Here is an example of some material that could be cobbled into a quiz. Yet Dexys Midnight Runners, a band which somehow was able to weave Irish rebellion and mysticism into popular music, falls into the error highlighted by Tolkien. In the lyrics to Waltz, the vocalist notes that the "Books of Histories" were "Fairy Tale Stories." Though he is objecting to the English rule, with its attendant "don't be a child, don't believe in fairies" disdain for the Gandalfian world view, he perhaps does not realize that his own language and thoughts have been robbed of the Green Man in some sense. Rowland was "a failed priest" in his own words by the age of 11 or so. THis is something to think about...
